In review: The Pride Jazzy Select Elite Power Wheelchair

The Pride Jazzy Select Elite Power Wheelchair is a power chair in the Jazzy Select line. The Select Elite is designed with durability, performance and affordability in mind. The Jazzy Select Elite is a “state-of-the-art life-enhancement device” for increasing mobility of semi- or non-ambulatory individuals. It is the company’s first front-wheel drive mobility power chair with a very low turning radius. This model features a new heavy-duty armor with shroud that comes in two colors (red and blue) and controller guards for daily use. It also features a high-back seat with removable seat and back covers and a bigger foot platform. The frame is double layer and powder coated for extra durability. Pride claims that this model is one of the easiest to service, and it comes with an extended 13-month warranty.

The Jazzy Select 6 comes with several optional accessories. These include the arm mount saddlebag for storing items (small and large), cup holder, crutch and cane holder (two), elevated or swing-away leg rests, heel hoops, oxygen and walker holder, rear basket, weather cover, safety flag and a selection of cushions and backs from Synergy.

Before the Jazzy Select Elite can be operated, a mobility device expert must fit the power chair to the user and instruct him or her on its use. In some cases, the user must practice operating the power chair in the presence of a care professional or a trained family member. New users may need some practice to maneuver through different terrains.

Consumer Reviews

Users with one month to over a year’s experience with the Jazzy Select Elite gave the device mixed reviews.

Reviewers who gave the Jazzy Select Elite four to five stars have positive things to say about the service. One user broke the foot rest and the technician replaced it at no cost within 24 hours. Users say that the Select Elite is easy to maneuver even in very tight spaces, and the controls are easy to use. The seat and armrests make sitting for long periods comfortable. One user said that the battery lasts for two weeks even with frequent use. The chair can handle flat terrain like mown grass extremely well. It is also much smaller than a wheelchair so it’s easy to take out while shopping and dining.

The biggest complaint about the Jazzy Select Elite is the bumpy ride on outdoor terrain. The tires are solid so you can feel every bump on some terrains. One user who has spinal cord damage said that he was unable to ride the chair outside and that it was painful when going over indoor bumps. Another had problems steering the chair because there is no steering column. A user also had problems because there was no lift available for his car.

The Jazzy Select Elite is a reliable and very maneuverable power chair with guarded tires to protect against wear and tear. It is also easy to maintain. However, some users report a rough ride on outside terrain and even on bumpy terrain indoors. Before buying, make sure to try out the machine on terrain that you will be using it for.
